Common Disposal Problems We Fix

Is Your Disposal Doing Any of These?

These are the most common garbage disposal problems we fix throughout Fort Bend County every day. Recognize your issue? Call for same-day service.

Humming But Not Spinning

You hear the motor hum but the grinding plate doesn't move — the disposal is jammed. Something hard (a bone, pit, silverware) is lodged between the plate and shredder ring. Do NOT keep running it — the motor will overheat. Call us to clear the jam safely.

Won't Turn On at All

No sound, no hum — completely dead. First check: press the red reset button on the bottom of the unit. If that doesn't work, it's usually a tripped circuit breaker, a failed wall switch, or the disposal motor has failed and needs replacement.

Leaking Under the Sink

Water dripping from around the disposal — the source determines whether it's a repair or a replacement. Leaks at the top sink flange and side dishwasher connection are repairable. A leak from the bottom of the unit means the internal seals have failed — replacement needed.

Loud Grinding or Rattling

A metal grinding sound means something hard — a coin, bottle cap, piece of glass — has fallen into the grinding chamber. Turn it off immediately and don't run it. We retrieve the foreign object and inspect the grinding components for damage.

Draining Slowly

Water backing up into the sink when the disposal runs — a clog in the drain line or the disposal's drain port, not necessarily a disposal failure. We clear the blockage and check the full drain path to prevent it from recurring.

Keeps Tripping or Resetting

Disposal works briefly then shuts off — the thermal overload protector is tripping. Causes include a partial jam keeping extra load on the motor, aging motor running hotter than it should, or a unit at end-of-life. We diagnose whether repair or replacement makes sense.

Leak Source Determines the Fix

Where Is Your Disposal Leaking From?

Not all disposal leaks are equal. The location of the leak tells us whether you need a quick repair — a tightened flange or replaced clamp — or a full replacement. We find the source in minutes and give you an honest recommendation.

3 Leak Locations — Different Solutions

Leaking at the Top (Sink Flange)

Usually Repairable

The mounting ring where the disposal connects to the sink drain has loosened or the putty seal has dried out. We re-seat the flange with fresh plumber's putty and tighten the mounting hardware — a quick, affordable fix.

Leaking at the Side (Dishwasher Port)

Quick Fix

The hose clamp where your dishwasher drain connects to the disposal has come loose or the rubber gasket has failed. We tighten or replace the clamp and gasket — typically a 15-minute repair.

Leaking from the Bottom

Replacement Likely

Water dripping from the very bottom of the unit means the internal seals around the motor have failed. Internal seal replacement is rarely cost-effective — we recommend a new unit and can install same-day.

What Customers Say About Our Disposal Repairs

Real reviews from Fort Bend County homeowners after their disposal repair or replacement.

★★★★★

"InSinkErator was humming but completely seized. Tech came to our Stafford home same afternoon, used the hex key to break the jam free, ran it, and found a small chicken bone lodged in the chamber. Cleared it out, disposal works perfectly. Thirty-minute visit, very fair price."

"Disposal leaking badly under my Rosenberg kitchen sink. Tech diagnosed it in two minutes — the sink flange mounting had come loose over the years. Re-seated it with fresh putty and tightened the mount. No more leak. He saved me from buying a whole new unit I didn't need."

"10-year-old disposal finally died — leaking from the bottom, motor struggling. Tech was honest that repair didn't make sense. He had an InSinkErator Evolution in the van, installed it same-day. Quieter, more powerful, and I have a 90-day warranty. Couldn't be happier."

Frequently Asked Questions

Garbage Disposal FAQs

Common questions about disposal repair and replacement in Fort Bend County and Greater Houston.

Why is my garbage disposal humming but not spinning?+
A humming disposal that won't spin is almost always jammed — something hard has lodged between the grinding plate and shredder ring. Stop running it immediately (the motor can overheat and burn out). Use the hex wrench in the reset port on the bottom to manually free the jam, then press the red reset button. If it still hums after that, the motor may have burned out. Call us for same-day service either way.
Why is my garbage disposal leaking?+
Disposal leaks come from three places: the top flange (loose mount or dried putty — repairable), the side dishwasher connection (loose clamp or gasket — quick fix), or the bottom of the unit (internal seal failure — usually means replacement). We pinpoint the source in minutes and give you the honest recommendation. See our Leak Locator section above.
Is it worth repairing a garbage disposal?+
It depends on the problem and the unit's age. Jams, switch failures, loose flanges, and drain line clogs are all worth fixing regardless of age — repairs are quick and inexpensive. Motor failure or internal seal failure in a unit over 8–10 years old is usually better resolved with a new unit — replacements run $180–$380 installed and come with a fresh manufacturer warranty plus our 90-day warranty on top.
What should I never put in a garbage disposal?+
The main offenders that cause the jams and failures we see most: fibrous foods (celery, artichokes, corn husks) that wrap around the grinding plate; starchy foods (pasta, rice, potato peels) that expand and clog the drain; grease and fat that solidify inside the drain line; hard items like fruit pits, bones, and shells; and non-food items — utensils, bottle caps, glass. Small amounts of soft food scraps are fine.
How much does garbage disposal repair or replacement cost?+
We use flat-rate pricing — written estimate before work starts, diagnostic waived with service. Most repairs run $80–$200. Full replacement including a new unit and installation typically runs $180–$380 depending on the brand and horsepower you choose. We'll show you the repair vs. replace numbers side by side so you can decide.
Do you install new garbage disposals?+
Yes — we carry common InSinkErator and Moen models on our service vans and can install same-day in most cases. If you want a specific unit, you can supply it and we'll handle the installation. All installations come with our 90-day parts and labor warranty on top of the manufacturer warranty.
